One person died and three people were injured in a multiple-vehicle accident in Toronto on May 20. Police closed a stretch of eastbound Highway 401 for nearly 12 hours after the truck accident while crews cleaned up the scene of the crash.
The accident occurred just east of Avenue Road around 4:30 p.m. Nine vehicles were involved, including a dump truck hauling a load of what police said appeared to be a type of sand. Investigators said that the driver of the dump truck lost control of the vehicle, which then hit several other vehicles and rolled over onto a car, crushing it and killing the driver inside. Three people suffered unspecified minor injuries.
The load of sand spilled out onto the road, covering the crushed car. The wrecked vehicles were scattered across the roadway in all lanes of traffic on Highway 401. OPP officers closed the highway between Allen Road and Highway 404 in order to process the scene and to allow cleanup crews to upright the truck, move the crushed vehicle from underneath it and remove the material that spilled onto the road. Reports indicated that officers continued to investigate what caused the accident.
The family of a deceased truck accident victim often struggles emotionally and financially after the loss of their loved one. The loss of the income that the deceased provided may make it difficult for the household to cope with burial expenses and other bills resulting from an accident. Some families in this situation choose to seek compensation from truck drivers or the owners of commercial vehicles. Personal injury lawyers may be able to advise families on filing wrongful death claims against trucking companies.
